It looks like YTTV is using precise location and getting around any / all servers. Does anyone know when this will be addressed?
Proton VPN - detected by Sling TV - does not matter which server you use in USA
In Australia every service detects its a VPN
I just tried SmartDNS and now am watching Sling TV – just seems Proton is a step behind on these features
(previously had used ExpressVPN which worked as well)
google is cracking down hard on VPN use across all of its platforms; you tube seems to be the worst of them all right now
doubtful any VPN provider will be able to circumvent Googles new detection methods
If YouTube is grabbing info from your device, nearby WiFi, GPS, phone number, etc, to figure out your location, then the problem isnt the VPN, the problem is YouTube being a little rat grabbing more data from your device than needed. F Google.
support told me to look at the trouble shooting guide for SLING – do they think I am a moron ?
none of the video services SLING FOXTEL BINGE KAYO FLASH PARAMOUNT+ NETFLIX … none of them work for me - they detect VPN immediately and refuse to play
I simply now use SMARTDNS and everything works fine
Previously I used other VPN providers and they all work - its only PROTON that does not work
I am the top level user/subscriber of PROTON I just thought to get something out of the money I pay you every year - but no the service simply does not work for me … great if it works for you
but desktop / mobile or FireTV – none of them work – they are all detected and blocked.
complete waste of my time using Proton.
None of the VPNs work with YouTube TV because it uses GPS tracking to detect your actual location. This applies to all VPNs, not just Proton VPN. There’s no way around it. The only way you can spoof your location for YouTube TV is with Tailscale (a peer-to-peer VPN). Tailscale allows you to create a mesh VPN to route your traffic back to your home network. This is useful, for example, if you travel out of state or out of the country and want to watch local channels or access YouTube TV, which isn’t available outside the U.S. However, it’s tricky because it doesn’t seem to work on my Apple devices. I heard it works better on a PC. So the next time I travel I’m going to try it with my PC. I have seen someone spoof their YouTube TV location while being in Japan to watch an NBA game with Tailscale that’s how I found out about Tailscale VPN.
How do you know?? I have proton vpns and worried about this
Please follow up with some more info in the post you made on the topic so our team can investigate further. Thank you.
I always have VPN on with YouTube, YouTube tv, and gmail. No issues.
So i am on vacation and had tested hulu and a few others w no issue. Fires up yttv and ran into issues, spent an hr or so tinkering and ultimately concluded that YTTV requires precise location enabled. From what I was able to tell, precise location uses GPS + cellular + wifi / router api to determine location. I do not believe prton von has a way to address this
I received a message from you guys to read the support notice in relation to Sling on your Site … I already did all that … every server you have in every location plus or otherwise is blocked
San Jose locations worked briefly before after 2 minutes they were blocked as well.
So it was the same for every service (I am in Australia) — Paramount + Netflix Sling - you name it they all detected I was using a VPN and told me to turn it off.
After 3 days of messing around with Proton - which I pay Premium Price to use — I simple went to SmartDNS … updated the settings and now everything works fine - first go - no BS and the streams are steady stable and like watching normal TV – so I am just going to use their services - because it just works… they sent me an offer for $192 lifetime - so that works for me price wise.
Previously I used ExpressVPN - and when the VPN got blocked I emailed him - and he sent me back new information and that worked – so in 15 minutes I got back up and working ASAP
Here at Proton you send me to a support page that has information that does not solve the problem – so yeah I am giving up on Proton VPN – its just not in the same class as these other services for this requirement.
It was working for me for like 2 years …since yesterday it stopped …it only work if I disable vpn - in my case I have installed vpn on router
if you are connected normally to your home country, sure it works fine for most people
but, when you try to geo adjust where you are, or pretend you are in a different country to trick youtube into accepting a cheaper subscription amount, its pretty much blocked now a days
plus, I have read in more than one source, that soon they will start blocking their searches and some other Google services, since they cant monetize your data easily if you are hiding behind a VPN
A VPN only creates an encrypted tunnel for internet. GPS tracking is outside the scope of a VPN.
Not familiar with Youtube TV. Do you maybe have a location saved to your Youtube or Google account? Does your device allow you to disable location access to this app or spoof the location? That might solve location tracking.

As we mentioned in your original post, there was a temporary issue with Sling which should be resolved now. Sorry for the inconvenience.
This, for my vpn configuration to work i had to create another Google account with no location and that would do the trick
Brilliant! I’m currently travelling in Germany, was weighing whether to buy a 7 day trial of DAZN to watch NFL game. As per your suggestion, changed location setting in YouTube TV App settings to “never” and it worked! Danke!
I can’t get on YouTube TV through Proton.
