Im currently using brave browser that comes with some nice safety feature and for VPN i use touch VPN (i only use it SOMETIMES to download stuff). What other software that is preferably free, open source and is a browser extension (it doesnt have to be any of this 3, but its preferable) that you guys would suggest? Thanks for any input!
If your internet router is able to: IPSEC.
Adblocker: uBlock. If you want more: NoScript.
But still the best thing is: brain.exe. Nothing is free.
Malwarebytes Free Edition is good to have on hand for on-demand scans if you think something got through. You don’t need anything else.
The best complementary solution to go with your full-fledged AV is a personal firewall. Free personal firewalls are pathetic. Example: SimpleWall. Commercial offerings, like GlassWire, are better if you have cash to spare.
It’s important to distinguish a personal firewall from a network firewall. Windows already comes with a network firewall built-in. A personal firewall allows you to granularly allow or deny network access to individual apps. Windows Firewall does this half-heartedly. It displays connection prompts only when an app tries to act as a server, never bothering outgoing connections.
Edit 1: Added hyperlinks.
Edit 2: In 2015, I used my personal firewall to stop Windows 7 from downloading and installing Windows 10 for me.
Windows Defender Updates
Yeah man, but using only your brain for protection is kinda hard, the ads when you visit any website now days are pretty relentless and some of them can be malicious so minimum u need ad blocker for that, and windows defender come with alot of tools and its pre installed plus its also pretty good now, so using it is a no brainer… Anyways thanks for your suggestions, i will look them up and see what suits my fancy
in fact i was thinking about buying malware byte premium… in any case, what do you think about the built in Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool? Is malware byte scan still better?
Ignore this. Windows has a firewall built in, you do not need to buy a personal firewall, those pieces of software are awful.
Please do not confuse a personal firewall with a network firewall. Windows already comes with a network firewall built-in. A personal firewall allows you to granularly allow or deny network access to individual apps.
Windows Firewall does both of these things, you don’t know what you’re talking about.
im using windows 10 and i will check out your suggestions, thanks!
If youre not calling me that and suggesting the networking method, only way for me to implement that i can think of is probably using a virtual machine to do my downloading, any other method probably to difficult for me to implement…
You don’t need the premium version.
The MSR only detects a very specific list of malicious software (not necessarily viruses), does not run at all times, and is only updated once per month. It has a very set task and is not a replacement for an antivirus like Windows Security (it isn’t called Defender anymore).
Don’t! He’s wrong! Installing a fucking firewall is awful advice.
You know, BigFan401 has a point, his attitude notwithstanding. Finding high-quality, standalone personal firewalls is difficult these days. Most of them come as part of “internet security” offerings, e.g., from Comodo, BitDefender, Kaspersky, ESET, and so forth.
Malwarebytes has a free utility called “Windows Firewall Control” (formerly from Binisoft), which extends the functionality of Windows Firewall with a program control module.
Alright thanks for the info and saving my money xD
dont worry bro, any suggestion i will fact check first, and then i will see if i have the ability to implement those suggestion, thanks for your comments!
Seems like alot of people are fan of malwarebytes, based on my research on google (lol) it seems pretty good too…
