This may not be the right place to ask this question but I’m having an issue connecting from my Freedom Mobile cell phone to my home router’s VPN.
What I’m able to do on my phone is:
- Connect to my VPN via WiFi
- Connect to my VNC server via cell service
- Do a port scan on my router via WiFi, showing my PPTP VPN on my router open on port 1723
- Do a port scan via WiFi on 8.8.8.8 showing DNS port showing port 443 and 53
What I’m NOT able to do on my phone is:
- Connect to my VPN via cell service
- Do a port scan on my router via cell service to my router or any IP address. It shows no ports open on any IP.
I’ve also tried the same tests on another phone that’s also on Freedom Mobile with the same results. I used the PingTools app for the port scanning.
Although I may be missing something, what this leads me to believe is Freedom Mobile is blocking ICMP traffic and some ports even though the FAQ says that there is no blocking except for outgoing port 25: https://www.freedommobile.ca/docs/default-source/default-document-library/internet-management-policy.pdf
Anybody experience the same thing?
I occasionally use a PPTP VPN over Freedom with no problems. The is from an Android phone to a Synology NAS.
I have done VPN to Synology
to Pfsense
to DDWRT
to Windows Server
no issues, I use them often, to do tech support for my customers on a daily basis.
that’s why data always explodes
6 GB is nowhere near enough for my monthly tasks.
if you are sure all the ports are properly forwarded, then check the VPN configurations.
try to VPN from a laptop (using a coffee shop WiFi) back to your server and make sure it works, if that works then your Wind mobile should work as well.
Thanks for everyone’s suggestions! I was able to get it working, there’s definitely nothing preventing me from connecting to my VPN through Freedom.
It was just a simple setting that I was overlooking, after fixing that I was easily able to connect.
Just a note, I’m still not able to do a port scan or ping to any IP address for some reason so that may either be a function of how cell service works or something that Freedom has done. It doesn’t affect my VPN, just an observation that hinders troubleshooting.
Thanks for letting me know. If it’s not too much trouble, are you also able to use your cell service to ping, do tracert, port scan etc? None of these things get a reply from any IP address from my Android phone through cell service (they work on a Wifi connection), they just time out.
I’m VPN’ing to DD-WRT so that’s good to hear you’re able to do what I’m trying to accomplish. The build of DD-WRT I’m running has a built in VPN option that my phone reports successfully connecting to through my own WiFi to my routers Internet IP address (it’s kind of a weird loop and not the greatest of tests, but it’s something).
Thanks for your suggestion, my next step will be definitely to try and VPN from a laptop and then my phone from a WiFi other than my own.
