G Fi VPN crashes frequently. have questions

We are newly acquired Google, find customers. And for the most part, we’re relatively happy. One frustration is the VPN. It crashes here every few hours. And most times doesn’t reload by itself.

On the other hand, we are Google One subscribers. And the Google One VPN will stay up almost indefinitely. I’ve tested turning off the Google 5 APN and turning on the Google One. VPN and everything seems to work great from a customer point of view. But it’s the under the hood that I’m wondering about.

.Is the Google Fi VPN? What encrypts text messages and phone calls? When we switch Google 5 VPN off and start using Google One VPN what kind of carrier protections do we lose?

Clear the Google Fi app storage and cache and see if it works.

It must be something with your device.

Turn off the VPN, more likely than not you don’t need it

That only made for a temporary and marginal benefit. After another hours Phone wakes up and the icon up above is missing again. The latest Google Fi app update that rolled out the past few days didn’t change the situation either.

It’s not that big of a deal, at least for our house. It just means simply using the Google One. VPN and leave it at that. Unless there’s some feature were losing doing so it seems to be a workable plan here.

In this world I suppose anything is possible. But I highly doubt it’s just my particular device. We have three different devices here and they all exhibit the same behavior.

And I wouldn’t be so quick to assume this is just an isolated or minor thing. This general topic got a lot of uploads and traffic that usually my posts don’t receive lol. It’s quite possible. There’s a bunch of silent lurkers out there that have encountered the same thing but haven’t brought it up in any subreddit.

Yeah, these aren’t the droids I’m looking for. I’ll move along. Move along.
:grin::grin:

Turn off the Google Fi VPN. It isn’t required to use the service.

Understood.
This morning I actually have access to two of the Fi phones here at the house. I just discovered something that answers a question of mine, but I’m posting it here so that if other people have questions the information is out there.

Google Fi encrypted phone calls between two Google Fi customers:
In short, the Google Fi VPN protection service in the Google Fi app. That doesn’t need to be switched on if you want encrypted and to end phone calls between two Google Fi customers.
In short? Picture does indeed require both parties to be using the Google Fi maximum protection switch, which is essentially the Google Fi VPN.

  1. If either customer has that VPN turned off, there is no end to end encryption between the calls.

  2. It’s like me. You choose to substitute Google Fi with Google One VPN, the phone call is not encrypted.

  3. If both parties on the phone call are using Google Fi and have the Google Fi VPN enabled, the phone call is encrypted end-to-end and can be seen on the Google phone app as a padlock under the contacts head picture during the active phone call.
What shows up is a small padlock icon and next to it The text that reads, encrypted by Google Fi.

Hope that’s helpful for somebody out there.
