How many of you use VPN?

Is it really necessary for security? I am inclined to say yes, but I’d like to hear other opinions on Mac VPNs

Honestly the only time I ever use a VPN is to watch region locked content.

It’s mostly about how much you trust the network you’re on. I prefer to go through a VPN service any time I’m not on my home network (which is honestly quite rare).

I only use it when I need to (i.e. torrenting, hide IP, access other regions, etc.)

Which is why I like Mullvad with its cheap monthly pricing model. There are some months when I never use it, and some when I do. Zero locked-in commitment.

Could even be worse than no VPN, considering how many companies are now offering the service. Plenty are trustworthy, equally plenty are not and log + sell your data

I use VPN to access blocked resources. In the country where I live, almost all Russian sites are blocked, and I sometimes need all kinds of information to write lab papers, term papers, etc.

I use Eero, which, I understand is pretty secure. But that said, I do have a healthy amount of caution.

why? What’s the benefit when not at home?

What.tor site do you find works well with Mac?

Because if you’re on a network you don’t own in public for example people can sniff the packets and steal your information. It’s the use case for a VPN lmao.

Privacy, mostly.

Without some sort of protection, the network administrator can see which websites you’re visiting and how much data you’re sending/receiving from them.

If I’m using a personal device on my work WiFi network, for example, I don’t want the IT folks to see that I’m on Reddit or Pornhub or whatever.

Not sure if any works well more than others. I just go to whichever site has what I’m looking for. For movies, I usually go to yts.mx. For shows (and also movies), I go to piratebay. If it’s something neither of those sites have, I go straight to google and hope for the best.

All websites and apps are using https nowadays. When using https, that is not possible (source: i studied IT and work as a software engineer).

The actual use cases are:

  • accessing geoblocked content
  • online piracy / torrenting
