Your favorite topic here - VPN.
Isn’t this a creative topic that we all like to talk
about? So inspirational…
Anyway, I tried to get rid ofAstrill because of
high price and lower server quality than before…But I failed. I read here many recommendations about different alternatives and l decided to try shadowsocks provided by Wannaflix. Setup was not so hard, even though tunneling selected apps through VPN and leaving others to normal network
didn’t work in beginning. As soon as I got connected on my phone I was happy since the speed was great (on some servers 95% of max) and latency was far far better than Astrill and that means much faster
and more responsive apps. I thought that’s it.
Finally something I need. And then…
Apps used for Windows PC are just not doing what they are supposed to do. l understand it’s a basic architecture and all but it just doesn’t work. Long story short-it was ONLY possible to get my browsers through VPN on PC and not the other apps. That’s just useless. PC is far more than just
a web browsers.I contacted customeer service and they tried to help but nothing worked. TUN just doesn’t work and after days of trying it couldn’t work. They said “something was blocking internet in my
computer”. Not sure what. Antivirus wasn’t, firewall wasn’t, app was set up normally…
Internet speed and latency were still ok on Android even though after few weeks from time to time it stopped to be as good as in beginning and reconnecting was needed (still better than Astrill).
I didn’t even try to instal| it on router so| can’t
comment on that, but it didn’t seem easy to do it.
In the end I came back to Astrill and not sure what should I try now. Those services that are horribly hard to set, have few servers in UK, USA, HK, have no router applet etc are not something I need. So yeah, I will still be overpaying this thing that somehow still
can’t be replaced.
Did any of you managed to find better alternative? And I am by no means “stupid Laowai who doesn’t
know anything about tech and just do what others do”. I know a lot, I just failed to find service that can be better than this one. Please share if you did.
Cheers.
P.S. I am waiting for those who will write how this is paid commercial and I will laugh in your face if Astrill doesn’t drain my phone battery before that.
I’ve been using Wannaflix on Android and Mac with only very occasional issues (and let’s face it, all of them have at least occasional issues). Can’t comment on Windows I’m afraid.
In my (anecdotal) experience, Astrill was murder on my phone battery compared to any shadowsocks client I’ve used.
Give Xeovo a try, but you will have same issue on Windows. You are not using VPN, it’s proxy. It won’t tunnel all your traffic and TUN mode is shitty implemented in all clients.
I was introduced to Veee by my friend who came to China for a few months and use it for my IOS and Mac. My cousin’s coworker uses GSOUCloud and it seems to work good as well but I don’t see much about it on Google/Reddit
I just don’t know why it never worked on my Windows. Actually we have two Windows PC and it just couldn’t work…
Sometimes I notice that my phone is downloading huge amount of data. On top of my phone I always see current download/upload rate and many times I noticed it goes like 20MBs, 15MBs and my phone becomes very hot. Then as soon as turn off Astrill download rate comes back to 0. Nothing was working in background, no updates are set to execute on mobile data. Just can’t explain…
I tried Clash as well, turned on Tun. Didn’t work. I tried also to check and uncheck apps that will tunnel through it. Whenever I turn on TUN nothing works, not even in browser.
I’m not sure what protocol WannaFlix uses but if it’s Shadowsocks you can use this program: GitHub - githello123/sstap
It tunnels all of your traffic on your PC to your Shadowsocks server. The program isn’t being updated any more (I guess the software author got invited to “drink tea”) but it’s been working for me for over 6 years on my PC without any problems. WhatsApp/Signal/PC games all go through the tunnel.
I had the same “problem” with WannaFlix and Windows, could not make my WhatsApp work, because it was an AppStore app. You solve it by setting up a router with WannaFlix and everything will be working fine. As mentioned above all options have their own small (or big) issues.
I’d uninstall it. Keep the Astrill install.exe around so you can put it back on if the other stuff doesn’t work, obviously, but since you have to reboot after it installs, I’d bet it’s doing something that may be interfering with what you’re trying to do.
TUN makes it act like a network adapter, something is wrong. It works totally fine for me. Did you install TUN? You should have a green icon beside Service Mode if it’s installed, if the little world icon isn’t green it’s not installed and it won’t work.
Was it hard to set up router? Thing is that even with router Astrill somehow wins because they have servers from countries I need to stream content and of course router I can’t take outside so first and main problem will remain.
I will try next time but I think it won’t help. Can’t be that program that is “killed” using taskbar is interfering with other program and doesn’t let it work on ONLY ONE option. Their service is just not made for using all apps on Win.
Yes it was installed. I even reinstalled it few times. Everything seems fine but no connection. Hard to understand. But I am not the only one with it I see
Takes a bit of technical knowledge but you can flash any compatible router (like ASUS RT-68U - very popular model) with Merlin Koolshare and then install 科学上网. It’s a very full featured proxy/vpn client that works with WannaFlix or your own Shadowsocks/v2ray server.
If you set up your own Shadowsocks or V2ray server, you can pick from a pretty wide variety of countries depending on where you want to do your streaming from.
No, it wasn’t difficult, but takes a bit of knowledge to customize to the optimal customized configuration. Otherwise it also works well. I used the GLiNet Beryl AX, which is a travel router, size of a external hard drive, so I can take whenever I go for a trip.
A good thing about it is that you can subscribe to other services other than WF. There are plenty offers and you can also setup one for yourself.
