I’ve been having issues with my detected location on search engines/YouTube not matching up to the VPN location.
A few examples:
Finland = St Petersburg
Argentina = British Virgin Islands
Albania = Bulgaria
Austria = United Kingdom
[VPN Server on the left, search engine/YouTube’s detected location on the right]
Is there any way to fix this? At first I thought it was just an issue with the virtual servers (India, Argentina, etc.) but this problem appears to be persistent across so many of them. They all used to work perfectly fine.
Hi there, /u/Jazz-Musician-Socks, thanks for your submission!
You used a flair that corresponds with rule 3 of the subreddit: refer technical issues to support first.
Some support agents are keeping an eye on here, but we still recommend using official channel for efficient troubleshooting - Surfshark customer support first. You’ll find both e-mail and live chat there. It’s 24/7, so enjoy!
If the question persists, make sure to include as much information as possible. Thank you!
This always made me question the security of Surf Shark.
It goes well beyond the search engine or YouTube. I have visited IP sites, for example, whatismyip.com or whatismyipaddress.com, and been told something different than what Surf Shark claims.
It has often made me suspect that they’re hijacked. With the feeling that I should not trust the service.
There is a support article on Surfshark explaining why this happens:
I find the wrong location happens if I’m connected to Las Vegas. But what I’ve found is that if I use whatismyip.com or whatismyipaddress.com they show the wrong location (they say I’m in Los Angeles) but ipapi.co always shows the correct location.
Surf-shark redirects IP to different one all the time…
For example:
I will set Australian IP, when check IP online straight away (no matter the service) it will show me the correct location, however if I will check again let say after 1-2min the address changes to Singapore or something like that…
not happy, Ill be moving somewhere else once my contract ends…
Not that I know of. Funny enough it is only Google and YT that identifies the location wrong. No matter what other service I use, they all show the correct location. But it doesn’t really matter what Google/YT thinks, it has no impact on search results or suggestions.
Hi, usually this happens if you have any P2P services active on your device. We’d be glad to double-check your specific case, could you reach out to our support team at [email protected] or by joining live chats on our site?
