I signed up for Surf Shark (used Nord most recently and a few others in the past). I have Avira Antivirus and she and Surf Shark don’t play well. I added Surf Shark on the exception list but Avira still reports blocking the host file change during connection establishment. Not sure if Surf Shark needs to change the host file and whether I can force Avira to let it happen so I went to live chat customer service.
I havent had this problem with any other VPN before by the way.
SurfShark VPN service customer service flat out told me that I should disable Antivirus while using VPN and surfing the internet and then there will be no antivirus popups. AAAAAAAhahahahahahhahahahahaha.
I dont even know where to begin but I asked him to please open an incident and give me an incident number because this is not a solution.
Weeks later still nothing.
Apart from that it recently started dropping connection and leaving me exposed so I think I will charge the money back, ditch it and go back to Nord. They at least you know did that one thing VPN should be doing. And I also liked that they had an option for apps that must go through VPN or no internet access.
Hi there, /u/dr__Lecter, thanks for your submission!
You used a flair that corresponds with our rule for contacting support first.
If you have unresolved technical issues or questions, we insist you contact Surfshark’s customer support first. If the question or issue persists after troubleshooting with them, make sure to include what’s been tried. If you don’t, the mods might remove your post when they get to it.
This is our support page. You’ll find both e-mail and live chat there. It’s 24/7, so enjoy!
Honestly. Avira Is more Spyware and adware than a good av nowadays and their detection rates are often worse than windows defender wouldn’t surprise me if Avira screws around in surfshark connection.
Check if the firewall feature got ssl or encryption scanning enabled disable that.
In my opinion yes uninstall that crap ware Avira was good 18 years ago but since they bundled the launcher and everything it got worse.
Avira is like the worst offender of pc repairs I did next to avg and Bitdefender.
I might checkout the settings of Avira to maybe help you better but honestly with most av and third party firewalls today they allways are buggy and finger in stuff around where they shouldn’t be and seemingly ignore rules.
Hii there. You can try to reinstall the antivirus whilst connected to the VPN. That could potentially solve the issue. Other than that our support needs to dig in a little deeper so give them a chance on our live chat if this doesn’t work!
I said Avira did not make any problems with any other VPN so far and in 10+ years on multiple computers in a household never had a malware or virus infection.
In my book that is good performance regarding the antivirus. Is there a better one available at the moment? Maybe. That does not chnage the fact that I used multiple VPNs and they didnt exhibit this problem.
Even if we disregard this it still leaves me with the problem of Surshark dropping connection and leaving me exposed once the laptop goes to sleep which is defeating the purpose of VPN to begin with.

Okay i dont know why your argument should weight more vs my 8 years of pc repair experience but fine.

So it must be clearly the VPN´s fault if didnt even try the basic troubleshooting that 2 people told you now.
Just because its the only VPN ( that does probably things different ) doesnt mean its the VPN Avira is known for fat fingering in stuff as i told you.

Did you check after a full clean uninstall of avira ?
Sorry if it sounded like that - I wasn’t trying to pick a fight. I’m just trying to resolve a problem or replace a product if it is not fulfilling the purpose it should.
The surfshark exhibited multiple problems that no other VPNs did thus far. The surfshark support rep told me to flat out don’t use antivirus period. Which made me even less certain surfshark is a minimally viable product as a VPN.
I can try to reinstall Avira or even put a different antivirus. That might remove problem with Avira not letting surfshark trying to edit the host file. But not too certain that it will resolve surfshark randomly dropping and exposing IP.

Just use windows defender its compatible with roughly everything and scores in test as good as the best paid solutions.

Suret hats a different issue , they promised an update 3 or so weeks ago and said now a few days ago it will drop this week.
