Does anyone know if a Roku device will allow you to mirror a screen on an Android phone/tablet while it is connected to a VPN? Chromecast does not allow for this (and yes, I am aware that there are some router-level changes that can be implemented to address this, but I’m not interested in going down that path if Roku allows for this).
I suspect this is an issue of the phone, not the roku. If it’s VPNed it probably won’t allow the screen mirroring to hijack the networking.
I don’t want to hijack the thread, but how do you mirror?
The Roku 3 and the Streaming Stick support screen mirroring from Android or Windows. The problem with using a VPN is the same as for the Chromecast: the mirroring software finds mirroring devices like Roku on the same local subnet by broadcasting an M-SEARCH command looking for UPnP responses. The M-SEARCH command is seen only on the same subnet that the sending device is on, but using a VPN on your Android device usually puts you on a different subnet from your Roku.
If you want to test this from a PC, you can download the generic tool Device Spy from here: http://www.playon.tv/downloads/tools/deviceSpy.exe. It will show you all the UPnP devices responding on your network, including the Roku. If you don’t see the Roku, then it’s not reachable with your current network configuration.
Sorry it’s backwards. Read from bottom to top
Thanks for that. It seems I didn’t know because my android is 4.1
No problem. Just some advice. When screen mirroring movies you will get some lag so you would be better to add Rarflix to your roku and add movies to it directly from your computer.
