Hi guys - so let’s preface this by saying I’m not an IT person at all.
During this coronavirus situation, my office is having us all work remotely. We were asked to bring in our personal computers to have a VPN installed and then connect to our server using a remote desktop connection. I have learned that the VPN doesn’t allow split tunneling so my local internet connection doesn’t work when connected to the VPN. That’s all well and good, but when I disable the VPN at the end of the day, I still have a super slow connection locally. Speedtest.net is showing anywhere from 0.03 to 1.5Mbps (if I’m lucky).
I’ve tried restarting the computer and the wireless router to no avail. I tried searching around reddit, I saw something about a kill switch but I’m not sure that’s applicable. There was something about making sure DNS settings being set to “Obtain DNS server address automatically” is checked off, and it is. I’m really not sure what else to do, hoping someone here has an easy answer!
If it helps, It’s a SonicWall Global VPN client and I’m running Windows 10.
Just a FYI a “kill switch” will let 0.0 mbps through or it’s not working so the fact you have measurable speed means data is exchanging. Check your network adapters ip v4 settings make sure it’s not goofed to use some weird dns server or also try looking through your browser settings to make sure you are not using a proxy. What is the Speedtest results hooked up to the vpn ?
That’s what I figured - the only other relevant looking things I could find when I was trying to search for an answer had mentioned a kill switch, but I figured if I was getting any kind of bandwidth trickling through, it meant that probably wasn’t an issue.
ipv4 settings show “Obtain DNS service address automatically”. I had seen where you can switch it to like 1.0.0.1 or 1.1.1.1 but that actually made it slightly worse.
Oddly, speedtest results through the VPN were way faster than normal. Not connected to the VPN when everything is working normally I get 100-150Mbps, through the VPN I was getting close to 600.
Normally speed is around 100-150mbps. When connected to the VPN and into the work remote desktop it’s actually way faster, but then I can’t use anything actually on my local computer.
I’m hesitant to try to uninstall the app since our IT person set it up in the first place. Worried if I uninstall I won’t be able to work next week.
