Is it good for privacy? I’m pretty sure it is made by a Google company.
Based on a quick wikipedia read it claims to not log use activity thankfully it’s open source so it’s kind of hard to lie about that.
Never heard of it until your post so thanks the info.

Probably works fine but mullvad and expressvpn are going to be what you want. Tried and true and both are used by numerous privacy nuts.
Outline can be very good for privacy, but it depends on how you deploy it. The idea is it can sit on any server or VPS and look to ISPs and especially government actors like just https traffic to some random site. But it’s mostly meant for either journalists our activists that can’t connect to a regular VPN/DNS situation and are being watched. It’s extremely easy to deploy and set up on local devices, but if you’re running all your traffic through a machine that’s connected to your name it’s much less useful.
For instance, if it’s sitting on a box that’s connected to your home internet, then you’re safe from snooping while out and about but all of your history is attached to your home ISP. Not ideal, about the same as just sitting at home all the time (yay coronavirus). So if you have access to an Ubuntu VPS out there somewhere that’s not connected to you at all, maybe? But if you want true privacy it’s a different way to go about it.
It WAS an offshoot of a Google project but it got spun out on its own. I don’t think you need to worry about ownership.
The Outline VPN was created by Jigsaw, a unit within Google that explores threats to open societies, and builds technology that inspires scalable solutions.
You can find information on Outline’s privacy and security, including two third-party audits, here: https://support.getoutline.org/s/article/Security-and-privacy.
The code is all open source and found on Github: https://github.com/Jigsaw-Code?q=outline&type=&language=
Outilne is good for privacy, since your traffic is encrypted and protected from direct access by your ISP or government.
It’s not an anonymity tool though, since the IP of your server could potentially be used as an identifier if someone ties the server to you. For anonymity there are tools like Tor, but it really depends on your threat model.
In the future there may be optional features that prioritizes access over privacy, such as smart proxying, which can improve performance and reduce costs.
Disclaimer: I lead the team that created the Outline VPN.
Just my 2 cents. I was in a country that allows vpns but chose to use my dedicated outline server that I had set up prior to going there.
OpenVPN was working for a bit but then kept getting disconnected. The country has highly monitored internet and I suspect something fishy was going on.
Outline worked like a champ and was very fast.
Of course and thank you for your response!
Thank you. They don’t have Outline in their list
Yes both of those are great VPNs but I know with Mullvad I can’t use ShadowSocks on IOS, what about Express can I use ShadowSocks on IOS? With Outline VPN it already deploys ShadowSocks on both PC and Phones, which I need to bypass my schools WiFi since they block VPNs
Thank you! I was planning to simply buy a DigitalOcean VPN Server and set it up like that with Outline.
Thank you so much. I’m planning on setting up a DigitalOcean VPN server with Outline. And I also saw Outline used ShadowSocks. So hopefully I can connect on my school WiFi since ShadowSocks mask VPN usage.
Thank you. Sadly doesn’t either
