I recently went back to school, where I live for the duration of the term. The school wifi isn’t great, as it blocks barious things to the point I can’t even download packages with pacman.
So, I need a vpn, but I’ve gotten myself confused; wire guard is the first suggested thing on the wiki, but it doesn’t provide servers. There’s a suggested service provider; but that doesn’t seem to work.
I could download another vpn like cyber ghost with openvpn, but apparently wireguard is better. What do I do?
I use mullvad, has support for wire guard and openvpn, costs about 5€ a month… Strong privacy promises, swedish company and you do not even need to put in a email address
I have a similar problem at my uni. What i have is a vps from aws lightsail (3.5$ per month plan). I’ve set it up with strongswan (found out that ip phones also use the main network) IKEv2.
Ymmv, but if this also doesn’t work, then you may try softether (they have some sort of implementation of sstp) or just use plain old ssh tunnels.
You still need a server for your client. You can roll your own server or purchase access to someone else’s servers.
If you decide to roll your own you can either use your own hardware at your house or rent a VPS. Linode offers install scripts for Wireguard as well as Openvpn which make it easy to deploy.
If you decide to purchase I suggest doing your own due dilligence on what is good as everyone as an opinion on their own VPN services they use.
For trustworthiness and client support, it’s hard to beat ProtonVPN as a service provider. They provide a CLI tool to assist with setup on Linux platforms including Arch and there is r/ProtonVPN for support including the vendor.
The free option should suffice for your use even if it takes a few moments to download any especially large packages the first time.
I use Surfshark. It was a bit of a pain for me to set up since I was newer to Linux at the time. But since I got it working it has done well and the price is pretty good.
So what I did was i installed the packages to run it within kernel, then I got myself I subscription from wireguard and downloaded tunnels from all over the US and other contrys to multi hop. Check out in mullvad.net
Most VPN services are not very trustworthy, nord got breached last year. Both tunnel bear and PIA are owned by not companies that do not have good history in regards to user privacy.
